We’ve all been there; thinking an interview went well. The atmosphere was great, the salary was perfect, and you even got on well with the Manager! So why weren’t you offered the position?
Well, there could be a number of reasons…
- They automatically hire friends, family and hire from within (internal promotions) over great candidates.
Unfortunately this is something that cannot be changed. Even if you’ve got 10 years experience, been coding since you were 12 and own a multi-coloured unicorn, it still won’t be enough. Sometimes it’s just who you know!
- They hire skills over personality.
In my opinion, this can be a fundamental mistake some company’s make. This is because if someone isn’t particularly technical in some aspects of the role, you can teach them.
You can’t teach someone to have a personality.
- They’re looking too much into the little things.
You might be technically excellent, but not have an expensive suit. Or you might prefer to start at 8am and finish at 4pm. Or you might have kept your coat on during your interview.
Interviewers pick up on these smaller aspects, and although it’s not the end of the world, sometimes it’s just how a company is run.
- They take the wrong chance.
It’s between you and one other candidate. You both have around the same level of experience. Who do they pick? Sometimes it won’t be you.
Don’t be disheartened. We all have setbacks, but its how we deal with them that can make us stronger in the long run.
Sometimes… it’s not you, it’s them. (cheese!)
